Scientists have described a muscle layer in the lower jaw that plays an essential role in chewing for the first time in the journal Annals of Anatomy. The novel muscle is located between the back of the cheekbones and the lower jaw, deep within the masseter muscle, the most noticeable jaw muscle. Place your fingertips on the back of your cheeks while chewing to feel the masseter muscle. It was formerly thought to have only two layers: deep and superficial. Some manuscripts, however, mention a mystery super-deep third layer. The research, led by Türp and Dr. Szilvia Mezey of the University of Basel's Department of Biomedicine, has finally uncovered this elusive third layer. An unknown super-deep third layer has been mentioned in various books.
The new muscle is placed between the rear of the cheekbones and the lower jaw. In terms of course and function, the deep part of the masseter muscle is easily distinguished from the other two layers. The additional layer helps to keep the lower jaw in place. Of course, a gleaming new bodily part necessitates a gleaming new moniker. Because it joins the lower jaw's muscular (coronoid) component, the team proposes the name Musculus masseter pars coronidea - meaning coronoid section of the masseter.
